Sorry, not sorry. I've been having a terrible time watching new (to me) Disney movies and Frozen was surprisingly great. I wish the story had some more depth, the songs were just songs and not exposition dumps, and everyone other than Anna and Elsa are way underdeveloped, but overall, I kind of loved it? I was able to just relax and become enthralled with the movie and not constantly distracted by stupid plot devices, bad animation, or terrible childish comedy. The story is pretty cliche and I wish it did more or had more to say, but it was surprisingly fast paced and that kind of made up for it. At what I figured was about the half-way point, I was thinking "There is more right, this is setting up for a big, epic second half" and then I pulled up the progress bar and there was fifteen minutes left (including credits); it had been almost and hour and a half. I felt like there was so much left to do and all of these characters with no real story, but Disney just spends five minutes hurriedly wrapping up a few minor arcs and none of them felt right. Everything is going far too fast and we're not getting enough of anything. However, it's so easy to get lost in that it feels like little time has even passed and we are at the end. The songs were okay, but they never just let a song be a song. You can't take any of them out of context and see them as real songs. Each song is primarily just expository and beyond the tiny chorus, nothing is memorable and by the final third, there are no songs. They are all performed well, but sometimes (especially in Let it Go) Idina Menzel can't help but be Idina Menzel and not Elsa. The animation is pretty great and other than a few things (when they are trudging face first into a snow storm, Kristoff squints his eyes, but they don't bother to change the animation for Sven's because he's not the focal point) they pay a lot of attention to how things work. There were times where I was more into how well they were getting just the physics of the snow right that whatever was happening story wise and the style of Elsa's castle and the decorations of her door in Arendelle's castle are beautiful. I was particularly concerned with them putting in a purely comic relief character like Olaf, but Josh Gad is great. I've seen him in other things and he's a great actor, but he pulls off Olaf's lines way better than I would expect from any other actor. Actually, Olaf is pretty damn funny. Beyond the song they give him (which serves no purpose), we get exactly the right amount of humor and none of it is eye-roll worthy. Frozen certainly has flaws, but it does enough things so well that they almost make up for it. Yes, the hype it gets is far too much and it's over rated, but putting that aside, it's pretty damn good. I know the sequel will fill in some of the gaps, but I just wish they developed more of the story and the characters.
