Predator 2 took everything that worked about the first Predator and stripped it all away. P2 feels like one a movie that would play on TBS at 11 in the morning. It's cheesy in all the wrong ways. The only thing P2 has in common with P1 is that the Predator is in it. P2 has a drug war between the Cubans in the Jamaicans in 1997 LA. In P1, Predator seems to be on Earth just to hunt and have a fun weekend. P2 Predator has no real reason to be in LA and is awfully selective with his prey. We got a taste of the Predator's ability to replicate (or maybe replay?) human dialog in P1, but P2 just kills the mystique of the Predator and has him calling guys motherfuckers. The Predator blood is better here (it's essentially the goo inside a green/yellow glow stick) but everything else is so much worse. The effects are terrible. The acting and script are awful, although I give Danny Glover tons of credit for how well he was able to work with the crap they gave him (and I always love seeing Adam Baldwin). The worst part is the explosions and their treatment of gore. There are tons of scenes where something awesome is clearly happening behind a column or they cut away right before we see what we want to see. What we do get is white sparks. Every explosion is white sparks. The budget for the first Predator is somewhere between 15 and 18 million dollars. P2 got 35 million dollars, so why the hell does it look and feel so much worse. P1 had to pay Arnold Schwarzenegger! It doesn't make any sense. The writers are the same, so why did they do such a terrible job here? P2 is a total mess and I can't figure out why. The only good thing about P2 is that is sparked some interest in adapting the Alien Vs Predator comics. Unless you want to see all the Predator movies, there is zero reason to see this.
