To put it plainly, I couldn't give any less of a crap about the historical accuracy of the film (probably at least partially because I don't know a damn thing about the real events) so that has zero effect on my rating. What does affect the rating is that I watched this right after Gladiator which does almost every single thing so much better. Starting with out main character, we can understand why people trust Maximus in Gladiator. They show us that he is a well respected general and we see how inspiring he is and we can see that he is a real leader. We see Wallace as a child and then flash-forward to people who he hasn't seen in many years just jumping right in line to fight for him. Why the Hell do these people give a crap what Wallace wants to do? They barely know this guy who just stirred up a bunch of crap in their town and all of a sudden they are ready to put their life on the line for a guy who hasn't shown any ability to lead or shown any military or strategic acumen. We are just supposed to buy into his ability for no reason. He's like six and then he's thirty-something and we don't know anything about him. Adding to that, I never once bought that Mel Gibson as a bad-ass. His accent didn't bother me, but it feels like Mel was trying to live out a fantasy as a though guy who all the ladies just swoon over, so he produced and directed a film so he could play pretend. I'm no Russell Crowe fan, but I believed him as Number One Gladiator; when he steps into the arena, I felt like he was bout to kick ass. Mel Gibson looks like a sad dad at a Renaissance festival. Everyone else was fine, but no one was really great. The cinematography was fine, but nothing was unique or creative. The score was often inconsistent with the tone of the scene and the movie itself was way too tonally inconsistent. They keep trying to shove in stupid little scenes of slapstick or childish humor so that Mel can make a Jim Halpert face. David O'Hara's entire character is just bad comic relief (of no fault to O'Hara who does a damn good job with the garbage they give him). I did like the gore and effects, which were honestly a little surprising, but that's really all I can give it. It's almost three hours long and I can see why I fell asleep halfway through the first VHS tape when I was younger. The pacing is terrible with so many pointless comic scenes and dull monologues. Even the rally cries and speeches Wallace gives that are supposed to be so iconic were lackluster. Within a couple of days, most of this movie will be completely gone from my memory. Braveheart feels like an ego project that is much more focused on Mel's wish fulfillment than making a good movie. Everything that Braveheart tried to do, Gladiator does 100X better five years later.
