The Belko Experiment was written by James Gunn, but he passed on directing the film. Greg McLean was chosen to direct and it feels like he had a different vision. I'm not entirely sure what this movie wants to be, but I'm not sure it does either. There are a few moments of dark humor (mainly with the juxtaposition of the brutal violence and the corporate office setting), but not enough to make the movie a dark comedy. There is a lot of gore (although it isn't convincing 80% of the time) and there is a level of suspense, but it's never enough to be a real horror or thriller movie. The Belko Experiment feels like it thinks it's a smart movie that has something to say, but I think it's overestimating itself. The acting is pretty bad but there are some legitimate actors here. It's like two halves of good movies, but they blended them together with water and it feels disconnected and unfulfilled. I really liked the premise and there were some cool practical effects. The story is bloated, but it's well paced. I want to love this movie and if Gunn directed it, I think we'd have a great satire or full on comedy here or if Greg McLean wrote the script based on the pitch, we could have had a solid horror with a unique location. How it is, it's an uneven hodgepodge of disagreeable elements. I was impressed with a couple of scenes, but it really doesn't live up to its potential.
