Rain Man is a movie where Dustin Hoffman portrays an "Autistic Savant" and Tom Cruise shows up to the set and follows Barry Levinson's directions. Dustin Hoffman clearly put a lot of effort into perfecting the minute details to creating a realistic and authentic character and its a shame that they partnered him with Tome Cruise, who plays Tom Cruise except louder. The story is fine; it's predictable and cliche, but compelling enough to drag you through two hours. 100% of the real issue is Tom Cruise. His character's relationships move in fast forward and it certainly doesn't help that he doesn't understand what tone to use for each scene. The only emotions I ever believed from Cruise were anger and frustration, which are his default settings. I didn't buy anything else from him and he has zero chemistry with everyone. Hoffman, on the other hand, was perfect. Every single thing he was selling, I bought wholesale. The score was distracting too. They hired Hanz Zimmer, who does great "epic" movie scores, but it doesn't work with what is essentially an odd couple road trip movie. The plucky Sang-Hi music doesn't fit driving down a Texas Highway or eating in a dinner.
