The Autopsy of Jane Doe was better than it had any reason to be. The claustrophobic setting and interesting story are great and I was never calling their next move. I love CSI, Bones, and those kinds of shows, so the idea of a horror movie built around an autopsy got me excited and while those elements of the story are great, the directions they go in weren't the ones I'd have liked. The cinematography is fine and for the only time I really noticed crappy effects were the sounds the use for rib cutting that are too obviously added in post and really bad CG smoke. The film is essentially limited to two actors and they do a great job most of the time. My issue was that they never act scared. When the scene calls for it, no one in the film seems remotely afraid. I won't spoil any plot details, but they see and experience things that are begging for a scream, a yell, a facial expression, or even just widening eyes, anything. I feel the bond between the father and the son, I feel their confusion as things unravel, I feel the sadness when a particular scene come around, but I never believed for a second that they were even the slightest bit afraid. I had issues with how dense and sloppy the ending is, but nothing brought me out of the film more than their lack of fear. It'd be like if in It, the kids weren't afraid of Pennywise, but more concerned that he might get blood on their new jackets. I definitely enjoyed the film, it's a fun movie, but acting issue, a few stupid story developments, and a lame and unfulfilling ending really mar the experience.
