Unfriended: Dark Web (originally intended to be Unfriended: Game Night, which makes more sense) has nothing to do with the original Unfriended, expect that it's a Skype movie, stars exclusively unlikable characters, has shitty effects, and has an interesting plot that only moves along because everyone is stupid and unreasonable. Dark Web is a better movie than the first, but it's not as enjoyable. Both movies take themselves way too seriously, but Unfriended is unintentionally hilarious while Dark Web is much more coherent and executed better, but it's no where near as fun. Dark Web forgoes the paranormal elements of the first film in favor of the "real world" deep web story line urban legends. Now, to be honest, I am not a "tech expert" and all that I know of the dark web is hearsay and speculation, so maybe the way hacking works in this film is entirely realistic, but I highly doubt it. Hacking webcams and phone cameras? Sure, that's a real thing. But anytime the "Dark Web People" (DWP) come on screen, the video glitches and the people are essentially blurry pixels. They say this isn't a paranormal movie, but they way they portray the DWP certainly feels paranormal. Is it supposed to be some sort of magnetic interference thing? It just looks terrible and unrealistic. It's actually a little problematic because not only does it obscure the DWP, but also what they are doing, what they are holding, and their surroundings, which often makes it hard to figure out exactly what's happening. There are other issues that are carried over from the first, mainly things that we clearly just aren't supposed to be paying attention to or notice. At the beginning, the main character opens Spotify and plays a song. As he flips through apps, the songs become quieter when we are supposed to be focusing on other things. When he's Skyping with his friends (I've only used Skype one time and it was a one-on-one so please correct me if I'm wrong) their audio quiets and sometimes even cuts out when he changes to a new window and when they are talking, there doesn't seem to be any reasoning for whose screen is in the larger focal spot. it's not always who is talking or performing an action; it's seemingly random. I don't want to divulge any plot details, but there are some other glaring issues that come up later as the story unravels. To put one of them vaguely, I though a big part of the whole Dark Web thing was anonymity, so I'd figure they would be a lot more protective of their identity. To cut to the chase, Unfriended: Dark Web is technically better than the first film, so if you legitimately enjoyed the first for what it was, Dark Web will probably work for you. However, if you hated the first film but got enjoyment from how bad it is and the unintentionally funny parts, Dark Web is just a bad, bad movie and deprives us of the fun we found in the first. Speaking only for myself, Dark Web isn't a remotely scary. It's not conventional horror movie (although it does have unearned, stupid, cheap jump scares) that builds a creepy atmosphere and dread, but instead tries to prop itself up as an "It could happen to you!" story. It's an okay idea, but it takes buys into its own hype way too much and just wasn't enjoyable.
