I think I hate this movie? Technically and artistically, Climax is wonderful, beautiful, and enrapturing. The use of color is memorizing and the camera work and constant booming EDM tracks still have me nauseous and disoriented. Visually I loved everything. The issue is that Climax feels like two separate movies, a dance movie and a psychotic drug rave gone wrong. Literally the first 45 minute half is a 15 minute dance number (which is wonderfully choreographed) and then 30 minutes of a couple of different boring conversations and a few people just partying. After the dance number, Climax hit a big low. I almost fell asleep five or six times; it is so boring. Very little of the what is said matters and most of the characters are much more than just bodies to take up space. The second half seems to be an attempt to make up for how fucking mind numbing the first half is. Climax is one of those movies where the less you know going in the better, I won;t go into details, but the main idea is that someone spikes the Sangria with LSD and things go out of control. Really, as far as plot goes, that is the only "real" story. We follow one person and their issue until we they pass someone in the hall and then we follow them instead until we come across someone else and then we move on to them. All of the "stories" go on simultaneously and, unlike other films, it doesn't feel like characters freeze and stop progressing until we get back to them. Even if we are with character C, we can still hear character A screaming in the background. I love how crazy it gets, but far too little happens beyond a few big tent-pole scenes. If Climax was 90 minutes of off the wall crazy LSD nightmare, I'd be all over it, but I don't want to watch a 15 minute dance number and then 30 minutes of asinine conversations from characters I can't tell apart and don't care enough to try and a few cool scenes can't make up for the rest of it. For as much hype Climax get, my experience was pretty anti-climactic.
