For their first movie, the Soska sisters decided to write, direct, produce, edit, design sets, act in, and even do some camera work and had CJ Wallis act, camera work, lighting, music, post production and marketing. Considering all the work they did themselves on a first outing and the $2500 budget, I have to cut them a little slack. Had they been able to afford a real crew of writers, camera operators, sound mixers, actors, editors, quality equipment, effect artist, sets and set designers, test screenings, etc. Dead Hooker in a Trunk could have been decent film. The reality is that this looks and feels like it was made by a first year film student. The Soska sisters clearly have a strength in practical effects when it comes to gore and with experience and a real budget I imagine they could do something great, unfortunately, (at least from what Dead Hooker in a Trunk shows) that's really the only thing they have a handle on. Aside from the titular hooker (who plays a pretty convincing dead body) the acting is awful. Nobody's character feel real, they never quite match the tone of the scene, and they just don't have the acting chops to pull off the wooden dialog. I assume they have no real actors in the cast, but if they put any effort into the script, it would be in the realm of possibility to salvage the movie, but they didn't. I'm not even sure a script existed when they started filming. The story is repetitious and makes no sense, the characters have barely any personality and don't even have names (the four main characters instead being credited as Junkie, Geek, Badass and Goody Two Shoes; the dog introduced over half-way through for no reason does get a name though), no one's actions or motivations make sense, and (possibly to do the bad editing) the timeline is muddled because they show shots in the wrong order. Two characters are sitting behind the car, we cut to the four characters together in from of the car, and then we cut back to the two characters behind the car again. I'm not sure if anyone watched the finished product for quality purposes because in addition to mis-ordered scenes, the sound is terrible. The soundtrack often drowns out dialog and the mics constantly fail to pick up what the characters are saying. I missed at least a quarter of the dialog because the volume on the dialog is way too low or they are too far from the mics. They use obvious ADR, so they clearly aren't averse to it, so I can't fathom how they could decide to keep the original, inaudible dialog and not re-do it. There are whole scenes that should have been re-shot, but they just don't. If anyone bothered to watch the film critically before they sent it off, they'd have seen clear inconsistencies (there is a character who's arm is severed and sown back after 3 seconds with some fishing line who uses the arm minutes later) and the issues I mentioned before. A movie like this of course requires a certain level of suspension of disbelief, but Dead Hooker in a Trunk requires a total abandonment of common sense and thought in any capacity. Pulling a tooth wouldn't cause a huge spray of blood. The layout of the sets make it clear that they are just filming wherever they can and pretend it's a church or a hospital. The hooker seems to live both in a college dorm room with a door that opens on its own and a house that clearly belongs to a family, but they tell us she has no family or anyone who cares about her. A body that's been dead for days would have visual notifications. Blood appears and disappears randomly. Two police officers arrive at a motel responding to a missing persons report and apparently rent a room to interview a suspect. A guy has sex with the dead hooker and never notices that she's dead. When they first find the hooker in the trunk, they take it out with their bare hands and continue to contaminate the crime scene and spend the rest of the movie putting their finger prints all over her body and her apartment. So many things that go way beyond suspension of disbelief. If there is a real script for Dead Hooker in a Trunk, I would be shocked. Nothing seems to be planned. The don't pay attention to whether it's day or night when they film and if that matches up with whatever time it is in their movie. The story meanders and is out of order. Everyone is irrationally stupid. Even the technical parts are just terrible. I offer a level of forgiveness because it's the Soska Sister's first film and them and CJ Wallis did almost everything with a budget of $2500, but Dead Hooker in a Trunk is unforgivable. Even if you (somehow) actually love this movie, how have to hate that you can't hear a quarter of the dialog. It's not the worst movie ever, but it is very bad. If they spent a little less on blood and instead got a real editor, Dead Hooker in a Trunk could have been a real movie and not just a poor excuse for the sisters to squirt blood on each other.
