Alien 4: Resurrection is way better than 2 & 3, but it's not as good as the first film. While the essential plot of the movie is the same as every Alien movie (Xenomorph is loose on a space ship and everyone tries to escape), it's a lot simpler and scaled back story from the previous two. It's a natural escalation from the first film, but it doesn't go off the rails like 2 & 3. The acting is fine, although I hated every single character and was actively hoping for more casualties. Most of the fun in watching the Alien movies for me was going in blind, wondering what they could possibly do next, so I won't spoil any plot details. Alien Resurrection, again, changes what the Xenomorphs look and act like, which is unnecessary and confusing. The movie was written by Joss Whedon and you can see his attempts to lighten up the movie and make the characters more "goofy and quirky" which is a terrible tone to try and force into an Alien movie. I like the main plot line (even the odd character they add in the last 20 minutes), but it's was too over the top and ridiculous. Perhaps I'm just glad that this movie was better than the absolute piece of garbage that is Alien 3, but I enjoyed Alien Resurrection. It never really felt like an Alien movie (but it certainly does more than 3) and it's dumb and gaudy, but I actually enjoyed myself. My ranking is Alien 1, 4, 2, 3. Resurrection is not even close to the quality of the first, but I didn't like what they did in Aliens and Alien 3 is terrible. Alien Resurrection is big, dumb fun.
