Review:
The character played by the incomparable Vanessa Redgrave says it all: "You've never seen Howards End. I want to show it to you."
What she does shortly thereafter sets the drama into full motion, with a liberal serving of wit and humor. It's brilliantly written, brilliantly acted, and brillaintly done, though I'm afraid the (sub)plot of class and society may be tiresome to an American audience. Perhaps the element of suspense would prove to be appealing enough to suffer through this (sub)plot. The female characters far outshine the male ones, and even Sir Anthony Hopkins plays second fiddle to both Vanessa Redgrave and Emma Thompson. As always, Helena Bonham Carter steals a lot of scenes.
