Review:

Do yourself a favor and don't look at any plot summaries or read reviews with spoilers. The Others is a unique movie that goes in new directions ad delivers some real thrills. It's all well acted (except for one of the child actors) and the script is well written. Despite this, I have two big issues that stop me from giving The Others a perfect score. Firstly, this movie came out in 2001, but it looks so much older. This movie looks and is shot like it's from the early 90's. Maybe it's just a personal preference, but it looks like a vhs you'd have gotten from Blockbuster. The other issue was much more important. The Others is primarily a Ghost/Paranormal Horror movie, but the musical score often portrays it was a whimsical family movie. Scary ghost stuff is happening and the music is a light-hearted romp. Did they know what movie they were making? The tone is so confuse, or maybe I'm confused and someone spliced the horror into Downton Abby. They don't match and it's very jarring. The Others is a great new approach to the Ghost/Paranormal genre, there are some issues, but it's very enjoyable.
