Review:

All that Bone Tomahawk is missing is a real story. The acting from Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, and Matthew Fox is great and their characters are compelling. The score and cinematography are serviceable. The problem is that there is very little plot. A couple of people get abducted by a mysterious Native American tribe and our group of "heroes" go to get them back. That's okay for a base story, but it needs more layers; there needs to be more going on. The characters need backgrounds or at least we need to learn something about the Native American tribe. Matthew Fox's character is begging for more background information. As soon as I saw Kurt Russell, I was hunkering down for a film like The Hateful Eight, but it never really feels like a western and there isn't enough suspense to be a thriller or enough fear or dread to be a real horror. Bone Tomahawk is just kind of floating around, craving an anchor to something, anything. It needs more something. I wasn't bored and I liked what I got (except the back-up sheriff, who was very annoying and obnoxious), but there is so much meat left on the bone that they don't even get close to touching. The Lord of the Rings series is primarily about Frodo and the Fellowship going to Mount Doom to destroy the Ring, but there are so many side-plots and we learn about the protagonists and the antagonist. There is intrigue and there are betrayals. We really build the world and learn its history. The first half hour of The Fellowship of the Ring has more plot than the entire 130+ run-time of Bone Tomahawk. How can a movie that is over two hours do so little? Heck, Dude, Where's My Car is a movie about two guys trying to find their car, but the plot is much more complicated and involved than that. Give me more! Bone Tomahawk would be a good first episode, but is an underwhelming stand-alone movie.

Whoops, looks like something went wrong.
