Army of Shadows

I had never seen a film on the French Resistance during the second world war. At nearly two-and-a-half hours, mainly in French with some German and English, it requires commitment and focus from the viewer, as the resistance had required of its leaders and followers. The viewer is challenged with what I would call a minimalist film - stark, quiet, bare, cold, and alien. Army of Shadows (L'Armee des Ombres) has, in retrospect by critics and a new audience, emerged as director Jean-Pierre Melville's masterpiece. But beware, the year 2020 may not be the best time to view this. Roger Ebert's 1969 review described Melville's masterpiece as this: "Rarely has a film shown so truly that place in the heart where hope lives with fatalism." Or perhaps it would be the perfect film with which to close 2020. Look for the Criterion Collection, whose high-definition digital transfer was supervised by the film's director of photography, Pierre Lhomme.

Howards End

The character played by the incomparable Vanessa Redgrave says it all: "You've never seen Howards End. I want to show it to you." What she does shortly thereafter sets the drama into full motion, with a liberal serving of wit and humor. It's brilliantly written, brilliantly acted, and brillaintly done, though I'm afraid the (sub)plot of class and society may be tiresome to an American audience. Perhaps the element of suspense would prove to be appealing enough to suffer through this (sub)plot. The female characters far outshine the male ones, and even Sir Anthony Hopkins plays second fiddle to both Vanessa Redgrave and Emma Thompson. As always, Helena Bonham Carter steals a lot of scenes.

The Great Gatsby

It stands the test of time. During the scene in which the major characters are in a hotel, desperate to escape from the oppressive summer's day, the heat and the humidity are palpable on the actors' sweat, radiating off the film and onto the viewer's skin. It edges out the 2013 Baz Luhrmann remake in its emotional resonance, if a comparison must be drawn. Both are superior films, but then again, how can one go wrong with this classic story by F. Scott Fitzgerald?

The Great Gatsby

A fresh reinterpretation of a favorite American classic. A thoroughly enjoyable ride from start to end. The only criticism may be that it is slightly less emotionally resonant than the 1974 film version. If you have seen that one (and love it), resist the temptation to compare the two. The two films are products of two different eras. Both can be fully enjoyed because both are true to the source material.

An Education

A quiet film with a subversive side. Carey Mulligan is a revelation in the lead role.

Bonobo

It is an odd, or perhaps quirky, film that raises unusual questions about modern social relationships. I found the film to be warm, with heart. It might be a good change of pace without venturing into the “inaccessible” territory where some “indie” films live. You’ll know if it’s for you within the first 15 minutes.
