How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Disappointing in every which way save the awesome graphics with an extremely juvenile story line alienating every discerning fan with a weak storyline, an even weaker villain and a boring plot that robs the greatness of part 1 and 2 because guess what, the characters we loved didn’t grow at all in this lazy, uninspired, laughable (and not in a good way) segment which could have been so much more. A travesty. Avoid at all cost.

Alpha

This tale has been told countless times and repackaged differently with themes of solitude, growing up, and finding one’s home at all cost. Throw in a gorgeous backdrop, a time when fire was man’s greatest invention and a pack of wild animals then you are able to separate yourself from the usual suspects. Top it off with a surprise but believable twist in the end and I believe you have a winner.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

This overtly convoluted storyline which tries to be epic but fails in just about every department is such a shame as I was looking forward to this outing with Henry Cavill added to the stellar cast but there wasn’t anything super about the film. Visually, it’s gorgeous as it is presented to us in a breathtaking view of Paris but that’s a given in this sort of film. Also a given is the wonderful car chase and helicopter chase that this film presents. But if you’re looking for more than action but a concrete storyline that is easy to follow and entertaining to boot, sad to say this isn’t it. The characters felt flat and the script was mediocre at best. They did do one thing correctly. The title. It’s indeed a fallout.

Crazy Rich Asians

Having read the book before watching the film, I don’t understand all the negative feedback this film is generating. It’s not War and Peace but it never pretended to be. It’s a romantic comedy with the usual ingredients only this time it’s an Asian family. Yes, it’s predictable and revisited many cliches but it doesn’t detract from the telling of the tale and I thought the ending was satisfying. It was portrayed true to the novel and the lead actors Constance Wu and Henry Golding were believable as a couple but Awkwafina, who played the best friend Peik Lin Goh stole the show. She was hilarious with the best one liners and she delivered! The movie gave us wonderful cinematography of Singapore and the food that they ate made me gain at least 10 lbs just by watching. The wedding ceremony at the end of the show was just magical. Thumbs up all around.

The Vanishing of Sidney Hall

This film chronicles the life of Sidney Hall (Logan Lerman), a loner with serious writing skills and how he catapults into success and ultimately disappears from the face of the earth while he is tracked down by a mystery man (Kyle Chandler). I love how the film jumps back and forth from his childhood to the present as each piece of the puzzle that’s presented to us gives us a better understanding of Sidney’s life and what lead him to his choices. Wonderful cast with strong performances all around that includes classmate Brett Newport (Blake Jenner) and Sidney’s love interest, Melody (Elle Fanning). But really, this is Logan Lerman’s film as he embodies the necessary ingredients in bringing Sidney to life with total conviction as one can’t help but be moved with the journey his life takes. It can feel and most probably is a tear jerker but I believe this film makes one appreciate to be alive and that’s a great thing for a film to leave you with once the final credits has rolled. Don’t you think so?

Mandy

When a zealous, religious, sadistic leader (Linus Roache) spots Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) walking down the road and plots to kidnap and possess her body and soul, this sets up this dreamy, visual tale as her husband, Red Miller (Nicholas Cage who shines) moves heaven and earth to extract revenge. It’s really a simple story with wonderful 1980’s elements (it takes place in 1983) but what separates this from most films out there is the cinematography and lighting that is hazy, breathtaking, spooky, sinister, captivating and terrifying sometimes all at once. This is a visual film with minimal dialogue, extremely graphic and violent with echoes of David Lynch with shout outs to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Mad Max films. Definitely not for the faint hearted but those with a hankering for this type of film will be in for a treat.

Venom

When a shuttle crash lands into Malaysia that had harvested alien life forms for Carlton Drake’s (Riz Ahmed) company to be used eventually on humans, our unsuspecting hero, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) a journalist stumbles upon this truth and upon attempting to expose this inhumane act to the world, he inadvertently gets exposed to the alien entity that latches onto him and they become Venom - a super powered creature that can mutate its physical form into any form or shape it desires along with super strength and stamina. The movie starts off shaky at first with the acting a bit scattered, especially from Michelle Williams (very uncharacteristic as she’s normally so solid) who plays Eddie’s girlfriend but after the 30 minute mark, when the story begins to settle, everything starts to improve astronomically especially the acting from the cast and the story gets really fun and exciting. Great chase scene along downtown San Francisco that was visually spectacular and imaginative showcasing the beauty of the City at night time. Definitely the highlight of the film! As this movie is part of the Marvel Universe, I feel like it could work as a stand alone film as it didn’t require one to know anything about the M.U. Overall, it’s a fun adventure romp with goofy elements and another winner due in large part to Tom Hardy’s acting chops.

Gifted

A tender tale about a devoted uncle, Frank Adler (Chris Evans) who is the guardian of his niece, Mary (McKenna Grace), a math prodigy entrusted to him by his sister who wants only a regular life for her daughter who had taken her own life when Mary was just a baby. The problem comes when his estranged mother, Evelyn Adler (Lindsay Duncan) comes and wants full custody of her granddaughter. The question this movie post is does one wants to be great and remembered but not allowed a normal life or does one wants to be happy? Strong performances by Chris Evans and breakout star, Mckenna Grace as well as Lindsay Duncan. The story flows well as this drama infused with timely comedy is one that is easily enjoyed by all that mainly takes place in Florida. It pulls at the heartstrings and finds beauty in the simple things in life and how beautiful love can truly be. An uplifting experience.

Incredibles 2

Having to follow it’s predecessor, The Incredibles which was a breath of fresh air combining super hero elements with family life and succeeding in every level imaginable was a monumental task for the follow up and it clearly showed in the opening scene as well as the next 40 minutes as it paled in comparison as it mimics similar scenes established in the first outing. But, when the characters starts to gel and the story lines became more interesting and dynamic with Edna Mode’s appearance (who had the best lines in the entire movie) and the predictable twist where the remaining family members team up to rescue Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) and the world from imminent danger, the film kicked it up a few notches in excitement and starts to feel like the summer event of 2018. The true star of the movie is definitely Jack Jack. When he is on screen, you can’t peel your eyes off of him and what antics he’s up to. All in all a fun movie outing recommended to children of all ages.

The Purge: Anarchy

With the concept that the US government allows one night each year when everyone has the right to murder anyone from sundown to sunrise is a chilling notion that is deployed admirably in this graphic, disturbing film. Our protagonist Sergeant (Frank Grillo) is on a mission to extract revenge on an individual that killed his son who was spared by the system through technicality but finds himself helping a few helpless souls caught in the mercy of the new law. The writing is interesting enough with solid performances by the cast and a few interesting twists in the storyline that works well. If you are in a mood for a violent, action adventure flick with thrilling suspense you can’t go wrong with a movie that delivers the right amount of bang for your buck. Please pass the popcorn and the ammo while you’re at it.
