This unique film was awarded the Palm d'Or in 1978 and France's Cesar Award for Best Foreign Film in 1979.
The Tree of Wooden Clogs (L'albero degli zoccoli) is Ermanno Olmi's masterpiece on Bergamasque peasant life in the Lombardy region of Italy. Olmi cast locals and, with no professional actors in a film lasting three hours and six minutes, it may seem like a documentary. It's not. It defies definition but watching it may be described as an experience that is both physical and metaphysical. It is hypnotic, visceral, mind-blowing, heart-breaking, and more. Is it entertainment or is it a meditation on life?
