Prometheus was never pitched as an Alien prequel, because in so many ways, it isn't. While it is past of Alien's universe and there are connections, Prometheus never feels like an Alien movie. All four Alien movies are very simple stories and Prometheus tries to be so much more, with existential questions and a much more complex and confusing story. The visuals are amazing and there were only a few bits of bad CGI. The score is fine and Ridley Scott is a strong director. The first half (maybe the first two thirds) of the story are well paced and and compelling. All of the acting is great, though I hated every single character and everyone in that ship is just terrible at their jobs. The last half (or third) loses the thread and does what I had imagined to be impossible; it made Alien boring. The first part weaves a well developed world and raises all of these questions, some that are clearly meant to be left unanswered and others that should be, but I think Scott watched Lost before he started Prometheus. We understand what Holloway (who is apparently not Tom Hardy, but Ryan's brother from The OC) and Shaw are trying to accomplish, but what are Magneto and Æon Flux's motivations are. Other characters have no reason to believe that their goals can be accomplished by this trip. There are definitely things that need you need to work out by yourself, but there are far too many questions that are never addressed. The comparison to Lost is totally fair; for every answer we get three more question. By the last half hour, everything goes off the rails and I lost the thread. We stop advancing the plot and circle the drain until it's credit time. Even when action is happening, it still manages to be boring. If you cut out the last thirty minutes and eliminate the very few Alien links, Prometheus would be a great, deep Science Fiction, but as it is, it's a solid hour and a half and a disappointing finale.
